Romance scammers create fake profiles to build trust quickly and then ask for money. Knowing their patterns makes them easy to spot.
Red Flags to Watch For
Be cautious if someone:
- Asks to move to WhatsApp, Telegram, Session or text within the first few messages
- Says they're overseas — military, oil rig, doctor abroad — and can't meet
- Professes strong feelings very quickly
- Avoids video calls or always has a reason the camera doesn't work
- Asks for money, gift cards, crypto or verification codes for any reason
Pro Tip
Never send money or gift cards to someone you haven't met in person, no matter how convincing the story.
Quick Checks You Can Do
Run a reverse image search on their photos. Ask for a short video call early. Compare their stated location with the details they share. Real people are usually happy to prove they're real.
